Meroko Yui used to be a wealthy young girl named Moe Rikyou. She was probably alive sometime around the 20’s or 30’s, as as often makes small remarks about personal joys and displeasures of “life back then”, in the small Gag manga’s at the end of each volume(Which generally follows by an “old woman” remark from Jonathan)
Moe was a strong willed, popular, and happy girl, and was best friends with the beautiful Fuzuki (Mitsuki’s Grandmother). Fuzuki was younger and sickly , but she was forced to take on much more responsability, and was being forced into an arranged marriage with an ugly corperate man, refered to as “Kimiharu”. Though the girls were fundimentally very different people, they were also best friends. Moe always did her best to make time for Fuzuki, and support her as a friend, and admired Fuzuki with all of her heart.
One day, the girls ran into a handsome man playing a violin. Both girls were taken away by his talent, and later learned that he was actually Seijyuro Kouga. Moe was the one however, who shared her feelings with Fuzuki, that she had feelings for him. Fuzuki felt it was not worth fighting with a friend, so she accepted it with grace, and was happy for her. The three eventually became a strong trio of friends, when everything went wrong. Moe was told that Fuzuki was very ill, and that she could not see her anymore. She was soon after told that SHE was now engaged to Kimiharu, as Kouga had taken to Fuzuki, and wanted her. Moe ran to Fuzuki hoping to hear that it was not true, and ran into both of them kissing. In a fit of rage and betrayal, Moe screamed at the two and ran.She found herself in a whirlwind of pain and hate. She was also being abused sexually by Kimiharu. She could no longer handle it, so she ran. Moe Rikyou Slit her wrists and died.
Meroko meet Rio Izumi after she become a shinigami, but judging by Izumi’s age, and when it seemed that he died, Meroko probably had previous partners. She also lacked memories of her life as Moe, HOWEVER, her zeal for romance never really died, and though Izumi was cold, she developed a crush on him. The team was called “Miru Meiku”.Meroko was very open about her feelings, but Izumi never really let her in to his heart. He seemed to play around with her feelings: Kissing her and leaving her alone. One day, Izumi presented her with her current outfit, which Meroko mistoke as a gesture of good will. She came back to find that Izumi had dropped her as partner, and forced her with a newcomer...Takuto Kira.
